Billboard Size & Readability Guide
Understand the relationship between your banner’s physical dimensions, text height and viewing distance. Use the quick estimator and checklist to review outdoor advertising artwork before production.

The quick answer
Size for the site. Design for the glance.
Billboard dimensions determine the artwork shape. Readability also depends on physical letter height, how far away viewers are, contrast, speed, lighting and visual clutter. A giant banner can still be hard to read if the headline is tiny.

Billboard sizes: start with the aspect ratio
There is no single universal billboard size. A roadside hoarding, building fascia or freestanding board may have different dimensions depending on the location and media owner. Always request the approved physical size, artwork template, trim/safe areas and delivery specifications before printing.
| Example banner size | Aspect ratio | Matching artwork example | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 × 10 ft | 2:1 | 2000 × 1000 px | Wide rectangle |
| 30 × 20 ft | 3:2 | 1800 × 1200 px | Moderately wide |
| 40 × 20 ft | 2:1 | 2400 × 1200 px | Wide rectangle |
| 50 × 20 ft | 5:2 | 2500 × 1000 px | Extra-wide rectangle |
Sizes above are examples for learning ratios, not a list of industry-standard formats. Pixel values only illustrate proportional shape; they are not print-ready resolution recommendations.
Estimate physical letter height from viewing distance
A font size specified in points or pixels doesn't directly tell you how tall its letters will be on the installed sign. Think in terms of the physical height of the final headline and the distance at which someone needs to read it.
Quick letter-height estimate
Try a viewing distance. These figures reflect the OOH checker’s internal distance-to-letter-height rules of thumb, not a tested industry standard or a guaranteed readability limit.
Starting point for a more generous letter height
A rough comparison boundary, not a safe minimum
Method: physical letter height = viewing distance ÷ 120 or ÷ 300. Actual legibility varies with font shape, letter spacing, contrast, weather, motion, viewing angle and visual acuity. Confirm with a physical or on-location mockup.
| Viewing distance | Comfort-oriented illustration (120:1) | Smaller-height illustration (300:1) |
|---|---|---|
| 20 m | 16.7 cm | 6.7 cm |
| 30 m | 25.0 cm | 10.0 cm |
| 50 m | 41.7 cm | 16.7 cm |
| 80 m | 66.7 cm | 26.7 cm |
| 100 m | 83.3 cm | 33.3 cm |
These figures are arithmetic examples from the checker's heuristic, not verified minimum readable heights. Always prioritize real-site testing.
Make your message readable at a glance
Established OOH creative advice emphasizes short copy, a strong focal point, large readable type and contrast. The Out of Home Advertising Association of America (OAAA) and OUTFRONT both describe roughly seven words or fewer as a useful rule of thumb, not a hard requirement. See sources.
One message first
Use the most important headline, one dominant visual, and clear brand identification. If the board requires a paragraph to understand, simplify it.
Prioritize high contrast
Light text against a dark, simple background—or the reverse—usually reads more clearly than weak combinations over busy photography.
Use legible type
Prefer clearly shaped letters with adequate spacing. Avoid extremely thin strokes, overly decorative fonts and crowded lines for distant roadside reading.
Design for the viewing moment
A pedestrian may have much more reading time than someone travelling past at speed. Test the likely distance, angle, lighting and exposure time.
Before and after: remove the extra message
These fictional layouts show why fewer competing elements can help the main idea stand out. They're demonstrations, not measured performance comparisons.
BEFORE — too much to read
Several messages compete at once; type becomes smaller.
AFTER — one main idea

A simpler hierarchy allows the headline to dominate.
Pre-print billboard checklist
Use this checklist before sending a large-format creative for production or approval.
- Confirm exact width, height and media-owner specifications.
- Verify the aspect ratio, bleed and safe areas.
- Check actual headline height, not font points alone.
- Use one primary message and a clear visual hierarchy.
- Test foreground/background contrast in realistic conditions.
- Review the design at expected viewing distance and angle.
- Consider moving viewers, lighting and possible obstructions.
- Check the print proof or display mockup on location.
Frequently asked questions
What is the standard size of a billboard in India?
There is no single size that works for every outdoor advertising location. Dimensions vary by site, local permissions, and media owner. Get the exact approved production specification for your placement rather than using a generic template.
Is banner pixel size the same as billboard size?
No. Physical size refers to the installed dimensions, while pixel size describes your digital artwork. The aspect ratio must match, but print resolution and scaling should follow your vendor's requirements.
How large should billboard text be?
It depends on physical viewing distance, expected exposure time, font design, contrast and the environment. Start by planning physical letter height, then test the actual creative. The estimator above illustrates a heuristic; it is not a certification.
How many words should a roadside billboard use?
Industry creative guidance often suggests about seven words or fewer as a starting point. A simple message and recognizable imagery matter more than meeting an exact word count.
Can the OOH Banner Visibility Checker guarantee readability?
No. It applies image-based detection and design heuristics to generate an approximate score. It cannot reproduce all actual lighting, viewing angles, traffic conditions, obstructions or human vision differences.
Should I test a billboard before printing?
Yes. Review a scaled visual mockup, check the physical headline height and contrast, and confirm the design at or near its intended viewing conditions before approving production.
